Townerville Review 1
If you always love conservation house by find the black and white bungalows rental house too pricey and big, the Townerville is a development you should consider.
Townerville is fully owned and managed by Far East Organization, which explains the uniformity and high standard of renovation in all the units, and at the same time, the rich heritage of Townerville from its heydays.
Townerville is an architectural legacy. It was built in the 1920s, yes, 1920s, almost 90 years ago. The 84 conservation terrace houses at Townerville with ethnic-style and colonial architecture has been preserved to its original splendor with modern day fittings, interiors and conveniences. It has become contemporary homes with spatial luxury. In short, it is modern day luxury and conveniences in a national heritage.
84 units at the Townerville have three different architectural themes and designs, namely Chinese(type A), Malay(type B) and European(type C)
34 units are located at the junction of Towner and May Roads built with traditional Chinese architectural influence (Type A). Unique features include special shaped facade beams and columns at the entrance Every special terrace house comes with two bedrooms, balconies and open-air courtyard. You can see details of exquisite and extensive sprucing even in the courtyard and balconies.
Another 24 terrace houses in Townerville were constructed with Malay influence and are classified as Type B. Distinctive features include pitched roofs, rows of louvered vents and lovely ornamental gable tiles. Each house is roomy, in fact they are huge for 2 + study configurations. The study leads out to a charming roof deck which is connected to the courtyard on the first floor through a spiral open staircase.
The last 24 houses at Townerville fronting McNair are fashioned after European designs. Very spacious as well, it features arched porticoes, facing bricks and glass panelled doors and windows. All the houses incorporate a living room, dining area, three bedrooms, three bathrooms and a study.
In 2014, selected houses were selected to include new kitchens, bathrooms and even wardrobes. One can find 2 to 4 bedroom inter terraces at Townerville and sizes from 2,127 to 3,524 Sqft.
One possible use for the Townerville terrace conservation houses is for home office. As long as tenants apply to the authorities for approval and keep non resident employee to maximum two.
For facilities, tenants of Townerville can apply for personal membership at the nearby Civil Service Club at Tessensohn Road.

Townerville Review 2
After Townerville was given conservation status by URA (Urban Redevelopment Authority) in 1990, 26 years ago, this estate which includes terraced townhouses on May, McNair and Towner Road were given a new lease of life. Henceforth, after this conversation status grant, Townerville was on its way to be one of the rare conversation estate for those seeking to live in Singapore's history.
Townerville was constructed in the 1920s while Singapore was a colony of the vast British Empire. Townerville, which comprises of 84 double storey townhouses, were then the official residences of British officers. After the British left Singapore, the Townerville townhouses were then temporarily used as private housings.
After the grant of conservation for Townerville, the Singapore Authorities soon went on a $12.4 million restoration project to bring back the former glory of Townerville. The restoration of Townerville follows strictly to the 3 basic rules of conserved buildings. These are known as the '3 Rs' these 3 Rs represent maximum Retention, careful Repair and sensitive Restorations. Basically, these 3 Rs are enforcements on restorations to be of utmost sensitivity while making the building suitable for modern day needs and living.
As a fully restored building, it is obvious that Townerville has satisfied and even superseded these requirements. One can clearly observe the fine touches which reflects the diverse cultural and architectural influences have managed to retain history and the rich heritage of the past.
The multi cultural past of Singapore are well exemplified in the architecture in Townerville. One good example is the architecture style of the 3 bed room houses. These 3 bed room houses in Townerville have louvered vents which are hallmarks of the traditional architecture of Malay kampung houses.
History went on that after the extensive restoration was completed, the Singapore Authorities went on an open tender for the sale of all the 84 terraced townhouses at Townerville. Far East Organization emerged as the highest bidder and bought all the 84 houses collectively at S$39 million. This price is based on Townerville bring granted a leasehold tenure of 98 years. S$39 million dollars at that time was a staggering figure but is small change if based on the value of properties today.
Far East Organization, after acquiring Townerville, went on to spruce up the 84 townhouses and added built in like air-conditioners, modern general house and bathroom fittings like showers, water heaters. These modern fittings blend perfectly well with the heritage design of arched porticoes and airy high ceilings.
Far East Organization has since then added the 84 Townerville terraced townhouses into its portfolio of properties for lease.
Townerville is basically divided into three main types of floor plans. There are mainly the two, three and four bed room floor plan and each style varying farcade. However, the general outlook of Townerville has stayed true to its originals.
Each Townerville townhouse consist of a living area, separate dining area and a kitchen on the first or ground floor of the terraced townhouse. All the bed rooms and balconies (for some) on the second floor.
Townerville is truly a good reflection of the multi racial background and heritage of Singapore, showing off the influences of the different main resident ethnic groups at that time.
Two bedroom townhouses in Townerville display Singapore ethnic chinese architectural features like the Oriental chinese shaped facade beams and columns at the front entrances. The three bedroom floor plan townhouses in Townerville in the meanwhile feature uniquely Malay architecture in the 1920s, such as rows of louvered vents, ornamental gable and pitched roofs. The largest four bed room terraces townhouses is a reflection of European inspired architecture in the 1920s as can be seen through the arched glass-panelled doors and windows and the porticoes.
The architect in charge of the restoration prices has taken care of the details to preserve the original Geist of the designs hundred years ago in Singapore. The timber wooden staircase and flooring on the upper level still preserve the original floorboards. The floorboards has literally been preserved for about a hundred years through periodical polishing and restoration. The ceramic tiles on the ground floor has been maintained. Fundamentally, most part of the floor plan of Townerville have been painstakingly preserved.
The floor plans of Townerville are simple, straight forward and yet elegant, allowing residents of Townerville to exercise their creativities in utilizing Townerville purely as a home as well as a home office. Generally, floor plan sizes of Townerville ranges from 2,127 sqft for a two bed room floor plan up to 3,524 sqft for a four bed room floor plan townhouse.
Typical floor plans of a Townerville terraced townhouse include exceptionally high ceilings, as well as a huge balcony on the second level or an open terrace. Lovely spaces for residents when they have parties or entertainments.
Some large units in Townerville feature lovely spiral staircases which connects the upper level to a private back open courtyard on the ground floor. An exceptionally cozy spot for Alfresco partying.
Far East Organization has added modern appliances like cooker hobs, Cooker hoods, refrigerators, air-conditioners, curtains, lightings, water heaters, etc to enhance living at Townerville.

Townerville Review 3
Townerville is popularly sought after to be used as a home office. Typically, terrace conversation houses like Townerville are quite sought after as a home office for various reasons. For Townerville, there are a few reasons.
Townerville is a two storey terrace house without fences. Without fences, Townerville looks more welcoming, like that of commercial buildings. As a double storey building, Townerville allows the occupant to use at the upper floor as a residential area while reserving the lower floor for mainly office usage. Thus, privacy is granted for the tenant of Townerville and the traveling time between office and home is a mere staircase away.
Townerville is near to amenities and the MRT, as well as to a host of bus services. Rendering staff and client traveling to the office easy and convenient.
Staff and clients of Townerville will generally appreciate the colonial style architecture and square wide internal spaces and open courtyards.
One of the URA guideline for home office is not to have more than two-resident staff and only certain industries are allowed. Townerville tenant will also have to seek the landlord's approval in applying to convert it to a home office. Townerville home office tenant will have to take note of these.

Townerville Review 4
Since townerville was relaunched in the 1990s, townerville has been popular with the expat, local as well as the home office tenants. Living in Townerville feels like living in the past, with new amenities and appliances thrown in.
Townerville appeals to expats from western countries who tend to appreciate artistic and nostalgic architectures. So we can find a lot of Europeans and Americans as well as Australians living in Townerville. There are also locals who might have worked overseas before or are seeking a chance in their lifetime to experience living in a conservation house.
Some of the tenants find Townerville suitable as a home office. The upper and lower floors allow segregation of every unit at Townerville to use it as an office downstairs while keeping the privacy upstairs. With no fences and open view, Townerville has been useful as a home office.
The other special feature of Townerville is that unlike other conservation houses like those in Joo Chiat, Chinatown and Everton Park, it doesn't come under a particular conservation enclave or area. Right in front of some townerville units are HDB flats, school, open areas. In that respect, townerville stands out on its own and the contradiction is actually very interesting.
Townerville units are also lovely houses for entertainment. The courtyards at the back of every townerville unit, plus the open air spiral concrete staircase throws in some characters, especially at night. Throw in some decorative plants and outdoor furnitures, you will be the envy of your guests very soon.
Having said these, one can't expect the exact same creature comforts living n townerville compared to living in condominiums or modern landed houses. There aren't attached toilets and some parts on the upper floor of townerville aren't air-conditioned. These are well, small prices to pay for the experience of reliving in the past.
