Founded in 1910 by a group of Cantonese merchants who wanted to provide Cantonese immigrants with free medical services, Kwong Wai Shiu is one of Singapore’s oldest charitable healthcare institutions. Through the Kwong Wai Shiu Free Hospital Ordinance, a 6-acre piece of land with 3 colonial buildings (built in 1857) was parceled off from what was then Tan Tock Seng Hospital, and transferred to us by the British Colonial Government in 1910.
Initially, Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital’s in-patient services were only available to the Cantonese, although out-patient services were accessible to all. But in 1974, the Constitution of Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital was expanded to include the admission of people of all races into our in-patient facilities. While holding strongly on to our traditional values of compassion and care, we at Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital also endeavor to keep up with the ever-changing healthcare needs of Singaporeans.
