St. Margaret’s was started by Mrs Maria Dyer, a missionary of the London Missionary Society, who resolved to start a home for homeless girls, providing them with an elementary education in English and Christian religion. Mrs Dyer’s spirit of giving back to the community, caring for others and loving God lives on in our School Motto of Charity, Patience and Devotion.
In St. Margaret’s, every student is important. We aspire for our girls to be confident creative and caring young ladies who will serve as contributing citizens, as espoused in the School Mission. Our total curriculum aims to realise our girls’ potential while grounding them in our Values of Upholding Integrity, Learning Continuously, taking Pride, Showing Care and Being Resilient.
The school has come a long way since 1842, growing from strength to strength. The niche areas are in the development of students in aesthetics, student leadership, academia, and in selected sports. In aesthetics, our students receive exposure to world-class performances and are given many opportunities to showcase their talents. As a Cluster Centre of Excellence in the Performing and Visual Arts, St. Margaret’s has a vibrant arts programme and promotes arts development with students in the school and cluster.
There is a rigorous values-integrated instructional programme and a strong character development programme. The school’s teaching and learning programme has undergone extensive refinements through the years to ensure that our girls become self-directed learners and achieve depth of understanding. The character development programmes include student leadership and values-in-action programmes that nurture servant leadership. The overseas exchange programme with countries like Hong Kong, Japan, Indonesia and New Zealand provides our girls with global awareness and a sense of local rootedness. The wide ranging co-curricular and enrichment activities develop leadership and strength of character while nurturing our girls’ talents and interests. Involvement in various public performances, external competitions and work attachment help enrich the learning experience of our girls while challenging them beyond their comfort zones.
Having done well in value-added academic performance and in co-curriculum such as the Singapore Youth Festival Central Judging, National Sports and Games competitions and Uniformed Group Proficiency tests, St. Margaret’s shares its best practices with schools nationwide to contribute to the fraternity.
In the St. Margaret’s family, we want our girls to grow and glow for God. May they enjoy a wonderful learning journey and build long lasting friendships as they acquire the skills, knowledge and attributes they need to prepare for a life of service to God, their country and the community.
