Sengkang Review 1
Before Singapore was a developed country, Seng Kang was a fishing village. The name Sengkang when translated from chinese has the meaning of prosperous harbour. This shows how Sengkang was very much close to the shoreline in the past.
Sengkang, whose pinyin is Sheng Gang, is officially known as Sengkang new town. It is formerly known as Jalan Kayu or Kangkar. This is considered as a planning area and a new, up and coming residential suburban town located in northeast Singapore.
Hdb or the housing development board of Singapore has in the past 20 or so years been actively been trying to make Sengkang to a complete mature housing estate. There are four main huge neighborhoods in Sengkang. Seng kang is one of the urban planning locations by URA for long term land use.
Areas in Sengkang includes Sungei Serangoon, Rivervale, Compassvale, Jalan Kayu and Sengkang Sculpture Park
The name Sengkang originated from a street by the name of LORONG Seng Kang, off Lorong Buangkok. In the old days, residents of Singapore like to nickname it Kangkar, translated from the Hokkien dialect, it means the foot of the port. In the earlier settlement days, there was a fishing port as part of the fishing village, the fishing port is located around Sungei Serangoon. In those days, there were pineapple, rubber and pepper plantations besides the fishing port, as well as vegetable and pig farms, as well as the tropical forest commonly found in Singapore then.
Before Sengkang was being developed to a modern town, the only public residential estate was the Punggol Rural Centre, which was a handful of low rise blocks for residents. These blocks were built initially to mainly accommodate farmers resettling from their farms. Those farmers were originally from Punggol Road. But through the years of urbanization, the blocks at Punggol Rural Centre were replaced in 2005 by high rise residential apartments commonly known as hdb flats.
By around 1994, which is 22 years ago, the HDB had had came up with a concept plan for Sengkang to convert Sengkang into a completely new Town. Ten planners from HDB planned Sengkang into six major neighborhoods that are able to eventually contain about 95,000 hdb flats and condo units.
Theses hdb planners capitalize on the rich fishing village history of Sengkang to set the theme for the future. Sengkang's theme is to be the Town of the Seafarer. Three of the neighbourhood sector has a marine theme while the other three display sprawling plantations of the past. The names and facade colours are reflection of the themes of the past. The present three storey pilotis and stilt effect of the housing blocks are reminders of the fishing villages and trunks of the plantations in Sengkang.
The first neighbourhood to be completed was Rivervale. That year was 1997 and about 33,700 HDB flats TOP.
Compared many other Singapore towns, the statistics in Sengkang are rather staggering. There are as of 2006, 384 HDB flats with 39,982 HDB flats in Sengkang New Town. The breakdowns were 16,017 4room flats, 19,477 5 room flats and as many as 4,488 executive flats.
The total area of Sengkang is about 4.09 square million, out of which residential areas take up 1.53 square million. The population of Sengkang is about 206,680 and has a density of about 20,000 per km square. Unofficially, some Singaporeans may call a Sengkang resident Sengkanger, Sengkangese, Sengkangian or Sengkangite. The number of flat units are 54,497 and is expected to increase to 92,000.

Sengkang Review 2
Sengkang is located in district 19 with about 59,500 flats and projected to reach about 92,000 flats as the development of Sengkang matures in its development. This will make Sengkang a relatively huge town in Singapore's context.
The current total population of Sengkang is around 207,000 and has a density of 20,000/km square. Total land size of Sengkang is about 4.09 square miles while residential land takes up about 1.53 square miles. Some people casually call residents of Sengkang as Sengkanger, Sengkangese, sengkangian or Sengkangite.
Sengkang has a rich history and tradition of being a fishing village so it its known as the town of the Seafarer.
Sengkang is located on the north of the Hougang new town under the North-Eastern Region.
Sengkang new Town is bounded by Tampines Expressway, Sungei Serangoon, Buangkok Drive and Jalan Kayu. The river, Sungei Punggol, cuts through Sengkang and divides Sengkang new town into Sengkang East and Sengkang West. The town centre of Sengkang is at Compassvale. In 2015, a new industrial estate called Sengkang West Industrial Area was developed on the west side of jalan Kayu
Sengkang New Town is separated into seven sub zones and they are Lorong Halus North, Sengkang West, Sengkang Town Centre, Fernvale, Anchorvale and Rivervale.
In Singapore, Sengkang is the first satellite new town to have its own public transport set up built together and planned according the development of the main public housing network. The MRT tunnels within Sengkang together with the above ground LRT tracks were developed to sync into the existing HDB flat estates.
The two rivers in Sengkang, Sungei Punggol and Sungei Serangoon, helps to provide nature corridors with green connectors to residents of Sengkang. These rivers have park connectors built parallel to them to allow residents of Sengkang to connect, jog, walk, participate in communal activities along the park connectors. Through the park connectors in Sengkang, residents are also linked from their resident flats to neighbourhood parks like Sengkang Riverside Park, Sengkang swimming pool and Anchorvale Community Centre.
Amazingly, these park connectors in Sengkang are directly linked to Punggol park and the Coney Island Park in Punggol New Town. Thus Sengkang residents can enjoy more recreational activities through the park connectors.
For aesthetics and relaxation, there is also the Sengkang Sculpture Park, which is located at Compassvale in Sengkang, belle the Sengkang LRT viaducts.
Special features of the Sengkang flat designs, which can be seen at Anchorvale, includes the pilots situated at the foot of all flat blocks, point blocks are developed with the c-shape to provide more privacy. Sengkang's unique features in its residential estate includes perforated balcony screens and net like parapets at most if not all of Sengkang's multi storey car parks.
