Specifications
A pair of bright, striking shophouses located in the heart of Chinatown on a pedestrian-only street. Restored to the Early Shophouse style, these shophouses enjoy high visibility and terrific foot traffic.
In the early 19th century, Pagoda Street was famous for its opium smoking dens and a coolie firm, Kwong Hup Yuen. Between the 1850s and 1880s, the shophouses were mainly coolie residences. However, by the mid 20th century, the Street transformed into a commercial hub, dealing mainly in textile and tailoring businesses. Between 1950s and 1970s, along with the increase in demand for Western suits, the tailoring industry flourished.
Established in 1915, Seng Cheong Tailor Shop, occupied 56 Pagoda Street in 1918. Seng Cheong was the first to set up a “洋服店” Western tailor shop at Pagoda Street. It was only after Seng Cheong’s opening that 22 other tailor shops followed suit.
